Members of the Komamboga Entrepreneur Association of Kanyanya, Komamboga Zone, Kawempe Division, like in most parts of Uganda, are still among the poorest members of the communities. This is due to several factors, including but not limited to the lack of productive resources, unemployment, and limited access to basic skills and opportunities for income generation.
The conditions that include a lack of basic needs or services, such as education, decent accommodation, water, and proper nutrition for their families, further contribute to the challenges they face.
Experience gained by the women councilors in this division over the years indicates that illiteracy levels are very low. This is the major obstacle preventing the majority of the community, particularly women, from acquiring skills and putting them into practice. The inability of these people, especially women, widows, and orphans, to effectively improve their livelihoods or living conditions is due to the marginalization they experience through discrimination from the wider community.
HIV/AIDS has worsened the situation due to existing gender-based differences in access to available resources and opportunities. For communities in Kawempe Division, HIV/AIDS has not only affected women's work—especially women as traditional caregivers of the sick—but they are also key guardians for food security and nutrition, including family preservation.
It is estimated that 47% of the poorest households in the division are female-headed, many of whom are single mothers, widows, and grandmothers.
To address the emerging challenges faced by affected members, the Komamboga Entrepreneur Association, in collaboration with communities in this zone and parish, has initiated a project aimed at catering to these issues, for which support is being solicited.
Households drawn from those living in disadvantaged situations, often characterized by helplessness and low self-esteem, have been identified as beneficiaries. This support will help them embrace hope and the prospect of making a difference in the quality of life for their families.
